An oval lithographed tin box, designed to hold two spools of sewing thread, shown here inside. This highly decorative version, in gold, blue, and red, features the slogan "For strong sewing, use Le Fil au Chinois in spools of Gold Thread." The back of the box promotes its use by hand or machine. The box is a charming example of the advertising of the French company "Le Fil au Chinois," founded in the 19th century. These small boxes were often given as gifts or used as display samples by haberdasheries. The advertising typography is beautiful, and the box is in good condition despite some signs of wear.
