Antique amber glass pharmaceutical bottle from the Pharmacie Centrale de France (Charles Buchet & Cie, Paris), retaining its original "Picrotoxine" label with a red "TOXIC" band. The bottle also bears a laboratory label on the reverse, "Physiological Test No. 490," indicating its use in a pharmaceutical or control laboratory. The mention "Univ. Competition 1900, Three Grand Prizes" allows this label to be dated after the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition, i.e., during the first quarter of the 20th century. Picrotoxin, an alkaloid extracted from the Levant nut (Anamirta cocculus), was used in experimental pharmacology as a powerful central nervous system stimulant. A small, very decorative bottle, emblematic of old pharmaceutical laboratories.
