Beautiful large format lithographed advertisement for the famous textile company J. Thiriez Père & Fils, an important manufacturer of sewing and darning threads founded in Lille. The illustration depicts a young woman with an orientalist soldier in a setting inspired by the exotic tastes very much in vogue at the end of the 19th century. The brands "Au Castor" (The Beaver) and "Au Cygne" (The Swan), visible in the upper medallions, correspond to two of the thread qualities marketed by the company. The whole constitutes a fine example of textile advertising from the Belle Époque, a period when thread manufacturers competed with refined images intended for haberdasheries and sewing businesses.
