The lenses are classified by graduated powers and separated into concave and convex lenses, as indicated by the metal plates "CONCAVE" and "CONVEXES." This type of kit was used in opticians' offices and by ophthalmologists to manually assemble lens combinations during eye examinations, before the widespread use of modern phoropters. The set is presented in a compartmentalized wooden box with central graduations, typical of professional optical equipment from the first half of the 20th century.
