Superb glass apothecary jars, each with its matching antique stopper. Their cold-painted decoration reflects the refined aesthetic of French and North Italian pharmacies in the second half of the 19th century: polychrome cartouches with Gothic lettering, gilt scrolls, red and green foliage, and the original crackled background. These containers were used to store important medicinal substances such as Chin. C. Off. (Cortex Chinae – cinchona bark, source of quinine) and Ipeca Off. (Ipecacuanha root). The ornamental work, entirely executed by hand, showcases the craftsmanship of specialised decorative artists. The ensemble, cohesive and decorative, is a fine addition to a pharmaceutical collection or a cabinet of curiosities.
