Large spiral spring from an antique clock bell, composed of a finely molded gilt bronze base and a blackened, tempered steel spring. This type of component, often fitted to the movements of grandfather clocks or mantel clocks, produced the clear, deep chime characteristic of 19th-century clocks. The gilding of the base, decorated with small cabochons, adds a rare ornamental charm to this mechanical object.
