A spectacular game once played in France, the game of "balle au tamis" ( sieve ball) involved propelling a ball with a rigid glove made of leather and stretched parchment, resembling a small drum. Very popular in 19th-century village festivals, it combined skill, power, and coordination. This glove, superbly preserved with its original nails, riveted straps, and still-intact stretched leather, is a rare physical example. It was fastened to the hand with a leather strap, allowing the player to strike the ball forcefully, whether flat or bouncing. A sporting, ethnographic, and decorative object, it illustrates a playful tradition that has now almost disappeared.
