A rare contemporary manuscript copy of the famous memorandum addressed to the King in July 1814 by Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot (1753-1823), Lieutenant General, Knight of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis, Member of the Legion of Honor and of the Institute. Written in brown ink on laid paper, this text was copied shortly after the First Restoration, probably for private circulation or reading in political and military circles. Carnot, a major figure of the Revolution and Minister of War under the Directory and then under Napoleon, expresses in it a passionate plea for raison d'état, justice, and loyalty to the people after the fall of the Empire. This manuscript, with its neat and consistent handwriting, free of erasures, perfectly illustrates the practices of copying and circulating political texts in post-imperial France.
