Old enameled plate bearing the inscription "PIERRE PONCE MORC." (Pumice Stone pc.), from a set of enameled plates that equipped the drawers of an old paint merchant's cabinet. Pumice stone was sold in pieces and used as an abrasive to soften, sand, and polish various surfaces; old technical treatises explicitly mention its use in pieces as a rubbing tool. Paint merchants supplied pigments, colors, and various raw materials to painters, decorators, and artisans; their drawer cabinets allowed these many powders and preparations to be stored separately, each compartment identified by a plate like this one.
