An old enameled plate bearing the inscription "VERT DE ZINC FONCÉ" (Dark Zinc Green), from a set of enameled plates that equipped the drawers of an old paint merchant's cabinet. Zinc green referred in particular to a pigment obtained by mixing zinc yellow and Prussian blue, marketed in various shades, more or less light or dark depending on the proportions used. Paint merchants supplied pigments, paints, and various raw materials to painters, decorators, and artisans; their drawer cabinets allowed these many powders and preparations to be stored separately, each compartment being identified by a plate like this one.
