An antique white porcelain medical jar for preserving live leeches, used in doctors' offices and pharmacies in the 19th century. This cylindrical model with side handles is decorated with the black typographic inscription "SENTUES" (LEECHES) on the front. The base bears the mark J. Mourier & Cie, 15 rue Pastourelle, Paris, Déposé, Gandois réussit (Registered, Gandois successor), identifying a Parisian supplier of medical equipment. The set includes the container (body) with its perforated inner filter/basket and its porcelain drip tray, essential elements for oxygenating and preserving the leeches in water. An emblematic object of pre-Pasteur medicine, it would make a striking decorative piece for a cabinet of curiosities or apothecary's interior.
