Decorative alphabet plate from the "Letters and Signs" series published by H. Vial, successor to Ch. Juliot in Dourdan (Seine-et-Oise), circa 1890–1900. Each capital letter is drawn in a shaded, three-dimensional style, typical of late 19th-century signs and shopfront paintings. The contrasting colors of ochre yellow, brown, and deep blue illustrate the taste for relief effects employed by sign painters and poster artists of the period.
