Elegant and ingenious, this forged metal snuffer was once used to tend candles. It allowed users to extinguish and trim the wick, which tended to smoke or flicker, while simultaneously collecting the embers in a small, sealed reservoir. This model, with its double handles and spherical feet, adorned with an openwork design, illustrates the aesthetic care given to utilitarian objects in the pre-electric era. Its pointed tip could also be used to move or extinguish the flame. A fine example of the art of fire-making and everyday bourgeois life in the 18th or early 19th century.
